ICT Seeks Interpol Red Notices for 10 Over July Uprising Genocide Charges
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has directed Police Headquarters to request Interpol Red Notices for 10 individuals, including several former ministers, in connection with charges of genocide, murder, and crimes against humanity during the July-August uprising of last year.
Among those named are former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, AKM Mozammel Haque, Hasan Mahmud, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel. Others include former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, ex-state ministers Nasrul Hamid Bipu and Mohammad Ali Arafat, and former Prime Minister’s security affairs adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique.
Speaking to the media on Thursday (10 April), Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed that the tribunal had approved multiple petitions from the prosecution, instructing the Inspector General of Police to initiate the process for arresting the accused via Interpol. He added that the necessary orders have already been forwarded to the relevant authorities.
The mass violence associated with the July-August uprising led to the deaths of over 1,500 people and injuries to around 25,000 others, according to tribunal records.
So far, arrest warrants have been issued in 22 related cases, implicating a total of 141 individuals. Of these, 54 have been apprehended, while 87 remain at large.
Providing additional context, the chief prosecutor said the tribunal has received 339 complaints in total, with 39 cases still under investigation. “There is overwhelming evidence behind each incident. We believe we will be able to present a strong case before the tribunal,” he stated.
