Cricket Confirmed for 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles After 128-Year Absence
Cricket is officially making a historic return to the Olympic stage in 2028, marking the sport’s first appearance at the Games in over a century. The Los Angeles Olympics will feature six-team men’s and women’s T20 cricket tournaments, set to be played at a temporary venue in Pomona, California.
This marks the first time since the 1900 Paris Olympics—where Great Britain defeated France in a one-off match—that cricket will be part of the Olympic programme.
Where and When Will It Happen?
While the exact dates for the cricket events haven’t been revealed, the 2028 Olympic Games will run from July 14 to 30. The cricket matches will be held at Fairplex in Pomona, a sprawling 500-acre site located about 50 kilometers east of Los Angeles. The venue, which has hosted a range of major events including the LA County Fair, will be specially adapted for Olympic cricket.
Team GB in the Mix?
The possibility of a Team GB competing in the cricket events looks promising. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been in talks with Cricket Scotland to field a unified Great Britain team. Scottish players like George Munsey, Mark Watt, and Brad Wheal are expected to be in contention if the team qualifies.
Will the USA Take Part?
Though the USA is not a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), as host nation they could be granted a spot. Discussions are ongoing, with officials suggesting a balance between competitive standards and host nation privileges.
Notable Absences
One big name who won’t be making a comeback is Indian superstar Virat Kohli. The former captain, who retired from T20 internationals after India’s 2024 World Cup triumph, has confirmed he won’t return—though he did joke about making a one-game appearance if India reaches the final.
The full West Indies team will also not participate, as Caribbean nations compete as individual entities in the Olympics. In events like the Commonwealth Games, Barbados has previously represented the region.
Why Now?
The inclusion of cricket in the LA Games is largely driven by the sport’s booming global popularity, especially in its fast-paced T20 format. The IPL has played a huge role in this surge, and the sport is also gaining traction in the USA. Major League Cricket, featuring teams from Los Angeles, New York, and other cities, is entering its third season, helping to build a solid fan base.
According to outgoing IOC President Thomas Bach, cricket’s growing appeal, especially in key markets like India, offers significant commercial opportunities for the Olympics.
What About 2032?
Cricket is expected to be part of the Brisbane Olympics in 2032 as well. The final matches are likely to be hosted at The Gabba, Brisbane’s iconic stadium, before it undergoes redevelopment.
A Look Back: The 1900 Games
The only previous Olympic cricket match took place in 1900 between Great Britain and France. Originally awarded silver and bronze medals, both teams were later upgraded to gold and silver. In a unique twist, players were also given miniature Eiffel Towers as keepsakes.
