Chinese tech powerhouse Tencent is exploring opportunities to expand into Bangladesh, according to a recent statement by Faiz Tayeb Ahmed, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of the interim government. The disclosure came through a Facebook post on April 28, where Ahmed outlined a series of developments involving global technology firms showing increasing interest in the Bangladeshi market.

Highlighting a growing trend, Ahmed stated, “Just as American tech giant Starlink has secured its license to operate in Bangladesh under the leadership of the Chief Adviser, now Chinese internet conglomerate Tencent has officially expressed its intention to enter the Bangladeshi market.”

He confirmed that an official meeting had taken place with Tencent, during which the government assured the company of prompt policy-level support to facilitate their entry.

In addition to Tencent, Bangladesh is also preparing to welcome Osiris Group (OSIRIS), which plans to introduce a hyper-scale cloud and data center infrastructure in collaboration with local firm Data & Cloud Company, Jatra, at Kaliakair Hi-Tech Park. The goal is to develop a world-class secure cloud environment that could attract other tech giants such as Meta and Google.

Founded in 1998, Tencent Holdings Limited is one of China’s leading multinational firms, offering a wide range of services in internet technology, AI, entertainment, and cloud computing across global markets.

This marks a strategic shift as Bangladesh opens up to global digital infrastructure giants, potentially transforming its tech landscape and boosting investment in data, connectivity, and innovation.
