Forgiveness, Not Revenge, Is the Lesson of the Prophet’s Life: Al-Azhari

The Chronify

No matter what obstacles or disruptions arise in the path of spreading faith, forgiveness and mercy not revenge are the true lessons of the Prophet’s life, said popular Islamic scholar and speaker Maulana Mizanur Rahman Azhari.

Maulana Mizanur Rahman Azhari writes that when the sacred land of Makkah was filled with unspeakable persecution, boundless oppression, and relentless mockery, and the strong voice of Tawheed (monotheism) and Risalat was being stifled, the mission of spreading the faith seemed like a dimming lamp buffeted by one storm after another. In response, the Prophet (peace be upon him) made the farsighted decision to temporarily leave his beloved homeland.

With a noble purpose to spread the sweet message of Tawheed to every household in the Arabian desert, he journeyed to Ta’if, located southeast of Makkah. Leaving behind bitter experiences, he sought to renew his efforts and convey the message of truth and beauty with fresh enthusiasm.

However, the people of Ta’if reacted with cruelty. Disobedient youths surrounded the Prophet (peace be upon him), some mocked and ridiculed him, while others, surpassing all bounds of audacity, stoned him, drawing blood and staining the streets of Ta’if with his sacred blood. A guarding angel offered, “If you wish, I can crush them between these mountains.”

Yet, even in the face of inhuman persecution, unspeakable abuse, and ridicule, the Prophet (peace be upon him) remained undaunted, steadfast, and wise as a mountain. From his heart flowed compassion, mercy, and love for the people, like the endless downpour of rain. With a trembling voice, he prayed for those who harmed him:
"O Allah, forgive them, for they know not."

SubhanAllah! Truly, this is the essence of an Ummah’s caretaker.

This is but a small glimpse of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) journey to Ta’if  a rare example of immense patience, unmatched sacrifice, and mountain-like steadfastness.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Perhaps Allah will bring forth from their descendants those who will worship One Allah."
 [Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1795]

And indeed, in just a few years, this was realized exactly as foretold.

Therefore, on the path of spreading the Deen, no matter how many obstacles and challenges arise, the true lesson from the Seerah is not revenge, but mercy and forgiveness.
