Israeli Envoy Claims Hamas Network Activity Extending Into Pakistan and Bangladesh

Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar has claimed that Hamas-linked activities may be expanding into Pakistan and Bangladesh, raising fresh concerns about the potential spread of extremist networks beyond the Middle East. His remarks were made during an interview in which he also questioned Pakistan’s diplomatic positioning in ongoing regional geopolitical developments.

Azar said Israel has been monitoring what it believes to be Hamas-related activity in parts of South Asia since the October 7 attacks carried out by the Palestinian group. He suggested that extremist organisations could be attempting to build influence or operational networks outside their traditional areas of activity, though he did not provide publicly verified evidence to support the claim.
 

The envoy further stated that Israel maintains a cautious stance toward Pakistan, particularly in light of Islamabad’s recent attempts to position itself as a mediator in broader regional diplomacy involving the United States and Iran. He expressed skepticism over Pakistan’s role in peace efforts, arguing that Israel does not fully trust the country’s intentions in counter-extremism cooperation.

Azar also extended his criticism to broader regional actors, including Qatar, stating that Israel has concerns about the diplomatic roles played by certain states in Middle Eastern affairs. According to him, differing interpretations of “peace” among regional stakeholders continue to complicate diplomatic alignment.

A key part of Azar’s remarks focused on Hamas, which he described as a central security concern for Israel. He claimed that Israel has been tracking possible ideological or logistical influence of Hamas beyond its core operational regions, including South Asia. He added that Israeli authorities have shared relevant concerns with counterparts in India and other regional partners.
 

The ambassador warned that the October 7 attacks could serve as an inspiration for similar tactics by extremist groups in other regions, a possibility he said should be taken seriously by governments across South Asia. However, he emphasized that some of the intelligence assessments remain based on ongoing monitoring and publicly available information.

Azar also touched on broader regional diplomacy involving Iran, noting that Israel’s primary focus remains ensuring that any international agreements with Tehran address long-term security risks. His comments come amid evolving diplomatic discussions involving the United States and Iran, which have drawn global attention.

India’s official position, as highlighted in parallel diplomatic discourse, continues to emphasize dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts while maintaining strategic relations with multiple regional partners, including Israel and Gulf states.
