Rising civilian casualties and intensified ground operations deepen crisis as ceasefire talks face setbacks
At least five people, including two children, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon, as tensions continue to escalate despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to restore stability in the region.
The strike occurred on Wednesday in the Ansariya area of Sidon district near the Lebanese border. According to Lebanon’s state news agency, several civilians were also injured in the attack. Thick smoke was seen rising from damaged buildings, indicating the scale of destruction caused by the airstrike.
The latest violence comes amid a fragile regional situation following a temporary ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran earlier this month. Although the agreement referenced broader regional stability, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected its relevance to Lebanon and vowed to continue military operations.
Israeli forces have reportedly intensified both ground and air offensives across southern Lebanon, including repeated strikes near the capital, Beirut. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 2,000 deaths and displaced more than one million people, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
In response, Hezbollah has stepped up its counterattacks along the border. The group claimed responsibility for recent rocket strikes targeting Israeli military positions and equipment. The Israeli military confirmed that several soldiers were injured, with at least one in critical condition.
Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict remain ongoing. Talks held in Washington between Israeli and Lebanese representatives included discussions on a potential ceasefire, but no agreement was reached. However, both sides have agreed to continue negotiations.
Meanwhile, the United States is reportedly increasing pressure on Israel to consider a temporary one-week ceasefire in an effort to reduce hostilities and prevent further civilian casualties.
