Be Cautious Before Scanning QR Codes
The Chronify
We now use QR codes for many things viewing a menu at a restaurant, connecting to Wi‑Fi, making payments, or logging into websites. They’ve become popular because they’re quick and convenient. But did you know that this very convenience can be dangerous if you’re careless? Yes many hackers now create fake QR codes to send viruses to our devices or to redirect us to phishing websites.
1. Does the QR code look suspicious? Take a closer look.
Scammers sometimes place fake QR code stickers over legitimate ones often in places like posters, walls, parking lots, or busy restaurants. While it may look normal at first glance, a careful inspection might reveal something odd. If it seems out of place or poorly placed, be extra cautious.
2. Verify the source of the code.
If you receive a QR code through email or message, don’t scan it immediately. Check who sent it and whether the source is trustworthy. Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or strange formatting in the message or branding can be red flags of phishing or fake websites designed to steal your information.
3. Check the URL before clicking any link.
After scanning a QR code, don’t blindly tap on the link. Review the URL carefully. Genuine websites usually use clean, branded domains. If the link looks strange, has misspellings, or includes suspicious characters, don’t click it.
You can also use an online tool like Google Safe Browsing or VirusTotal to check the safety of the link.
4. Be cautious if unusual permissions are requested.
If scanning a QR code prompts your phone to ask for access to your camera, location, contacts, or messages, that’s a major red flag. Most QR codes don’t need these permissions. If something feels off, deny the request and close the page immediately.
QR codes have made life easier, but with convenience comes responsibility. A little awareness goes a long way in protecting you from scams, phishing, or even malware.
So the next time you scan a QR code stay alert, stay smart.
