Canadian prime minister visits China after nearly a decade of tense relations

The Prime Minister of Canada has arrived in China, marking a rare high-level engagement after nearly a decade of strained bilateral relations marked by political disputes, trade restrictions and mutual mistrust.

This is the first visit by a Canadian prime minister since 2016, a period during which relations deteriorated sharply over issues including the detention of Canadian citizens in China, restrictions on Canadian agricultural exports, human rights concerns, and growing geopolitical rivalry involving the United States.
