At least 25 people were killed and around 80 injured after a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in northeastern Thailand, causing multiple carriages to derail.
A deadly train accident occurred on Wednesday morning in Thailand when a construction crane fell onto a moving passenger train, derailing several carriages and killing at least 25 people, police and emergency officials said.
The incident took place in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima, about 230 kilometres northeast of Bangkok. The train was travelling from the capital to Ubon Ratchathani when the crane collapsed onto three of its carriages.
According to police, the impact caused the train to derail, leading to severe damage and trapping passengers inside the wreckage. Emergency responders, including police, firefighters and medical teams, rushed to the scene and launched large-scale rescue operations.
Authorities said approximately 80 passengers were injured, many of them critically, and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue teams worked for hours to cut through twisted metal to reach survivors.
Preliminary reports suggest the crane was part of a construction project near the railway line. Investigators are examining whether structural failure, safety lapses or human error caused the collapse. Rail services on the affected route have been suspended.
The Thai government expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and ordered an urgent investigation. Officials said accountability would be ensured if negligence is found, while support and compensation would be provided to victims and their families.
The crash is one of the deadliest rail accidents in Thailand in recent years and has renewed concerns over construction safety near active railway corridors.
