Swedish activist detained under Terrorism Act for supporting Palestine Action group
Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist, was arrested in London on Tuesday during a pro-Palestinian protest. The arrest was made under the UK's Terrorism Act after Thunberg was seen holding a sign expressing support for prisoners linked to Palestine Action, a group the British government has classified as a terrorist organization.
The protest, organized by the campaign group Defend Our Juries, took place in the City of London. Police spokespersons confirmed the arrest, stating that Thunberg, along with another individual, had been detained for displaying support for a proscribed group in violation of Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000. The arrest occurred shortly after two people were detained for throwing red paint on a building connected to an insurance firm, which Defend Our Juries claims services the British arm of Israeli defense company Elbit Systems.
Thunberg's arrest has sparked significant discussion, given her prominent role in climate activism and the controversial nature of Palestine Action's actions. The activist had previously attended a fundraising event in Ireland in support of Gaza, further solidifying her stance on Middle Eastern issues.
