The Indonesian government acts against Grok chatbot amid concerns over non-consensual sexual deepfakes and AI-generated sexualised imagery.
Indonesia has temporarily blocked access to Elon Musk's Grok chatbot after concerns about AI-generated pornographic content. The decision marks the first time a country has officially denied access to the chatbot, which is developed by xAI, Musk's artificial intelligence startup. The Indonesian government raised alarms over the chatbot's ability to generate inappropriate and sexualised images, including depictions of scantily clad children, which were allowed due to safeguards failing.
In response, xAI has limited the chatbot’s image generation and editing features to paying subscribers in an effort to address these concerns. The move follows widespread international criticism, with governments and regulators across Europe and Asia expressing concerns about the risks of sexual content being generated by AI tools.
Indonesia’s Communications and Digital Minister, Meutya Hafid, stated that non-consensual sexual deepfakes pose a serious violation of human rights and the safety of citizens in the digital realm. As part of their response, the ministry has summoned officials from X, the social media platform associated with Musk, to discuss the issue further.
Elon Musk defended Grok, stating on X that users who generate illegal content through the AI tool would face the same legal consequences as those who upload illegal content directly. The situation continues to raise broader questions about the regulation and ethical use of AI technology globally, especially regarding content moderation.
Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, has stringent laws that prohibit the sharing of obscene content online, making it one of the strictest countries in regulating digital media.
