Bangladesh Shipping Corporation vessel forced to return to UAE waters after approval denied near strategic waterway

The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) owned vessel MV Banglar Joyjatra was unable to cross the Strait of Hormuz after reportedly failing to receive clearance from Iranian naval authorities. The ship was forced to turn back and return to its previous position near the waters of Mina Sakar port in the United Arab Emirates.

According to officials, the vessel had approached the strategic waterway late Friday night after Iran recently announced that commercial shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz were open. The ship, carrying fertilizer, had departed from its anchorage near Mina Sakar and moved toward the strait in anticipation of clearance.

However, the captain of the ship, Shafiqul Islam, stated that permission was ultimately denied by Iranian naval authorities at the final stage. He said the vessel was instructed to reverse course, following which it began returning toward UAE waters around 1:30am Bangladesh time on 17 April.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route, remains highly sensitive due to ongoing regional tensions. The decision has raised concerns within shipping circles regarding transit stability in the area.

Bangladesh Shipping Corporation Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek confirmed the development, stating that the vessel had failed to cross the strait and was returning to its previous location.

The incident highlights continued uncertainty in maritime operations through the region despite earlier announcements suggesting improved passage conditions for commercial vessels.
