Saudi Arabia experienced a rare winter spectacle this week, as several regions were blanketed with snow and heavy rain, transforming the usually arid landscapes into a winter wonderland. On Wednesday and Thursday, snow covered parts of northern Saudi Arabia, including Trojena, a mountain resort in Tabuk Province known for its hiking and skiing, where temperatures dropped below freezing.
The Saudi capital, Riyadh, saw its first significant rainfall of the season from Thursday morning, prompting the closure of schools and a shift to remote learning. Moderate to heavy rain affected cities like Buraidah and AlUla, while parts of Hail Region also experienced snow.
The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) issued warnings for continued snowfall in northern regions, with temperatures expected to stay low, potentially leading to frost formation. The General Directorate of Civil Defense has advised residents to stay cautious, especially when driving, due to the risk of ice on roads.
Gusty winds and moderate rainfall are also expected in several regions, including the Eastern and Riyadh Regions, with the possibility of hail and fog in certain areas.
Local residents have expressed excitement over the snowfall, with many flocking to open areas to witness the rare weather phenomenon.
