Toxic Chemical Found in Watermelon After Four Family Members Die in Mumbai

Forensic tests detect rat poison compound in victims’ bodies and fruit sample, deepening mystery surrounding family tragedy
A shocking family tragedy in India’s Mumbai has taken a dramatic turn after forensic investigators confirmed the presence of toxic chemicals in the bodies of four family members who died shortly after eating watermelon at home. Authorities now believe the deaths were not caused by ordinary food poisoning, but by severe poisoning linked to a dangerous chemical commonly used in rat poison.
According to Indian media reports, the incident took place on the night of 25 April when 40-year-old Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasrin Dokadia, and their two daughters, aged 16 and 13, suddenly fell critically ill and later died within hours. Initial reports had suggested the family may have suffered from food poisoning, but new forensic findings have raised serious questions surrounding the deaths.
Investigators said the family had hosted relatives and guests for dinner earlier that evening, serving mutton pulao. After the guests left, the family reportedly ate watermelon around 1am. A few hours later, all four family members began suffering from severe vomiting and diarrhoea before their condition rapidly deteriorated. They died within a short period despite efforts to save them.
The investigation took a major turn after post-mortem examinations reportedly revealed unusual green discoloration in several internal organs, including the brain, heart and intestines. Medical experts stated that such findings are uncommon in regular food poisoning cases and are more consistent with toxic chemical exposure.
Further forensic analysis identified traces of zinc phosphide in both the victims’ bodies and the watermelon sample collected from the house. Zinc phosphide is a highly toxic chemical widely used in rat poison and can become fatal if consumed even in small amounts. Authorities are now trying to determine whether the substance accidentally contaminated the fruit or was deliberately introduced. Investigators are also examining the possibility that the chemical may have been injected into the watermelon.
Another disturbing detail emerged during the investigation when morphine was reportedly detected in Abdullah Dokadia’s body. Officials are now investigating how the powerful pain-relief drug entered his system and whether it had any connection to the incident. Authorities are checking his medical history and examining whether there was any prior treatment involving the drug.
Police have registered an unnatural death case and begun questioning relatives and guests who attended the dinner gathering that night. According to investigators, the guests only consumed the cooked meal and did not eat the watermelon. None of them reported any illness.
The case has sparked widespread concern across India, with investigators continuing forensic examinations and awaiting additional laboratory reports. Authorities say all possible angles, including accidental contamination and deliberate poisoning, remain under investigation.
