Trump claims U.S. sovereignty at stake after Mamdani’s New York victory

U.S. President Donald Trump said that following the victory of New York’s new mayor, Jhohran Mamdani, the United States has ‘lost sovereignty’ over the city.
Even, Trump has claimed that with Mamdani’s victory, New York could turn into a “communist city.” However, Mamdani has said he is ready to discuss cost-of-living issues with Trump.
On Thursday (November 6), TRT World reported these statements.
U.S. President Donald Trump said that with Jhohran Mamdani’s election as New York’s mayor, the United States has “lost its sovereignty” over the city. Speaking on Wednesday, he added, “We’ll see about that,” but did not explain how U.S. sovereignty was compromised. Trump further claimed that the country’s largest city is now becoming a “communist city.”
In a speech in Miami, one day after Mamdani’s decisive win, Trump said, “Florida will soon become a refuge for people fleeing New York’s communism.”
He added, “Americans now face a clear choice will we choose communism or common sense? We want economic miracles, not economic nightmares.”
However, Trump also stated, “We want New York to succeed,” hinting that Mamdani might receive some support from the U.S. government. In Trump’s words, “We will help him a little, maybe just a bit.”
Trump made these remarks during a speech marking one year since his electoral victory over Democrat Kamala Harris. He said, “We have rescued our economy, regained our freedom, and together, on that glorious night one year ago, we protected the nation.”
Despite opposition from business circles, conservative media, and Trump’s harsh criticism, Mamdani won New York’s mayoral race. On Wednesday, Mamdani expressed his willingness to discuss cost-of-living issues with Trump.
The immigrant Muslim politician, who rose from being an “outsider” to mayor, surprised many. He humorously remarked, “I still haven’t received congratulations from the White House.”
He added, “I am willing to discuss with President Trump how we can serve the people of New York together. There are opportunities to work on fulfilling his campaign promises, especially regarding reducing the cost of living.”
Mamdani also noted that, like Trump, he had focused on high living costs, inflation, and rising market prices in his campaign. In his words, “The lesson for the President is that it’s not enough to just identify the struggles of working people you must take concrete action to address them.”
