US Flexes Air Power in Maduro Extraction Mission
The Chronify
The United States showcased its air dominance in a dramatic military operation to extract Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, deploying over 150 aircraft including stealth fighters, electronic warfare jets and drones. The complex mission highlighted advanced U.S. military capabilities and sent a signal to global rivals.
The United States demonstrated significant air superiority in its high-stakes operation to capture and extract Nicolás Maduro and his wife from Venezuela on January 3, 2026, deploying a wide array of aircraft to control airspace and support ground forces.
According to the United States Department of Defense and analysis of open-source data, more than 150 aircraft were used in the mission, including advanced fighter jets, bombers, refueling tankers, helicopters and unmanned systems. Aircraft types included Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II and F-22 Raptors, Boeing’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers for electronic warfare, Northrop Grumman’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes for surveillance, and B-1B Lancer bombers.
Specialised helicopters such as MH-60L Direct Action Penetrators and CH-47 Chinooks provided troop insertion and extraction capabilities, while reconnaissance drones and satellites fed commanders real-time battlefield intelligence. To sustain long-range operations, aerial refuelling from KC-135 Stratotankers extended the operational reach of both fighter and bomber aircraft.
Pentagon officials said the mission was designed to establish control of Venezuelan airspace, jam enemy air defenses and protect ground forces, giving U.S. forces freedom of maneuver during the extraction. The sophisticated use of electronic warfare, aerial surveillance and coordinated strike assets highlighted the breadth of U.S. military technology and sent a geopolitical signal to China and other strategic competitors.
The operation, code-named Operation Absolute Resolve, involved weeks of planning by U.S. special forces, intelligence agencies and air components, marking one of the most extensive and complex military actions in the Western Hemisphere in decades.
