The reason behind the decline in the value of the Bangladeshi passport

Due to increasingly strict global visa restrictions, the value of the Bangladeshi passport has declined further. In the Global Passport Index published by UK-based Henley & Partners, the Bangladeshi passport is now ranked as the 7th weakest in the world. In the 2025 ranking of 106 countries, Bangladesh is positioned at 100th.

Despite economic progress, many developed and developing countries remain reluctant to issue visas to Bangladeshi citizens.

Immigration experts say the misuse of visas, illegal immigration, and criminal activities by some Bangladeshis abroad have damaged the country's reputation. As a result, many countries have now enforced stricter screening procedures before entry.

Reports indicate that many Bangladeshis travel abroad on tourist visas and overstay illegally to work, often leading to detention and deportation. Some also use tourist visas to move illegally to third countries.

Such behavior is tarnishing the reputation of Bangladeshi travelers, experts say.

Some countries have even claimed that Bangladeshi travelers use transit routes to illegally enter third countries.

According to former diplomat Munshi Faiz Ahmad, trust in Bangladesh has declined due to the misconduct and illegal activities of some citizens abroad. Countries that once allowed visa-free entry now require visas for Bangladeshis.

Even with valid visas, Bangladeshi travelers often face additional questioning and searches at airports solely because of their passport.
