Gaza Dr Hussam Abu Safiya Still Held By Israel A Year On

Dr Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, remains in Israeli detention a year after his arrest. His family and supporters warn his health is deteriorating amid reports of inhumane prison conditions.
Hussam Abu Safia, a 52-year-old Palestinian doctor and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, has remained in Israeli detention for one year without being formally charged or tried, sparking growing international concern over the treatment of medical personnel in conflict zones.
Abu Safia became widely known for refusing to abandon his post during repeated Israeli attacks on the hospital in Beit Lahiya, north of Gaza City, choosing instead to remain with patients and medical staff despite escalating danger. Israeli forces later surrounded the hospital and ordered a full evacuation, after which Abu Safia was detained. The hospital has since ceased operations.
According to family members and rights advocates, Abu Safia has been transferred between multiple Israeli detention facilities, including the Sde Teiman holding centre and Ofer Prison, where he has reportedly faced ongoing mistreatment. Supporters say his health has significantly deteriorated during his detention.
No formal charges have been filed against Abu Safia. He is being held under Israel’s “unlawful combatant” law, which permits indefinite detention without a standard criminal trial and restricts detainees’ access to evidence against them. Human rights groups argue the law violates international legal standards, particularly when applied to civilian medical workers.
Abu Safia’s continued detention has drawn international attention, with medical organizations and rights advocates calling for his immediate release and urging greater protection for healthcare workers operating in war zones under international humanitarian law.
