Maitree Super Thermal Power Project continues its significant contribution to Bangladesh's energy supply.

In December 2025, the Maitree Super Thermal Power Project at Rampal in Bagerhat set a record by exporting 640 million units (MU) of electricity to the national grid. This marked the second consecutive month of the plant's leading performance among independent power producers (IPPs), supplying 11.5 percent of the country's total electricity generation of 5,531 million units.

The success of the Rampal plant is attributed to improved fuel security, with 800,000 metric tonnes of coal unloaded over the past two months and a coal stock of nearly 200,000 tonnes ensuring uninterrupted operations. This preparation is especially critical ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

Developed under Bangladesh-India bilateral cooperation, the project uses ultra-supercritical technology to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions. Its environmental safeguards, including flue gas desulphurization and zero-liquid discharge systems, further support its sustainability. Despite the reliance on imported coal, the plant's continued operational excellence and efficient fuel logistics help maintain a stable, cost-effective electricity supply, boosting industrial activities and strengthening the nation's energy security.

R Sarangapani, Managing Director of Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited (BIFPCL), and Ramanath Pujari, Project Director, commended the team for their efforts, expressing hope for continued success in powering national development.
