Lionel Messi has made history once again in the Argentina national team jersey. On Wednesday morning, he became the player with the most assists in international football. In a friendly match against Puerto Rico, Messi provided his 59th career assist.
The match took place at Chase Stadium in Florida, USA, which is also known as Lionel Messi’s home ground while playing for Inter Miami. In the first half, Messi delivered a brilliant pass that led Gonzalo Montiel to score a moment that made history.
With that assist, Messi surpassed former U.S. star Landon Donovan and Brazil’s Neymar, both of whom had 58 assists in international football. Now, with 59 assists, Messi stands alone at the top of the all-time international assist chart.
But he didn’t stop there. A little later, Messi recorded his 60th assist, setting up Lautaro Martínez for another goal in the second half. This achievement once again proved that Messi is not only a master goal-scorer but also equally exceptional at creating goals for his teammates.
The World Cup–winning Argentine legend continues to reach new heights with an eye on the 2026 World Cup. After lifting the trophy in Qatar, he is determined to make the final chapter of his international career even more successful.
According to statistics, Messi has now provided 397 assists in 1,129 career matches. Where he will finally stop before retirement that remains to be seen.
