Internet Affordability and Access Remain Central to Bangladesh's Digital Development

Affordable internet access has become a cornerstone of economic and social development as countries around the world accelerate digital transformation. In Bangladesh, growing mobile broadband coverage, expanding smartphone ownership and increased digital services have brought millions of people online, but experts say improving affordability and connectivity remains essential for achieving inclusive digital growth.
 

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), about 5.5 billion people, or roughly 68 percent of the global population, were using the internet by the end of 2024. Although global connectivity continues to improve, approximately 2.6 billion people remain offline, with the majority living in low income and developing countries where affordability and infrastructure remain major challenges.
 

The Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) has consistently identified internet affordability as one of the most important factors influencing digital inclusion. International experts generally recommend that the cost of basic broadband service should remain within a small share of monthly income to ensure that lower income households are not excluded from digital opportunities.
 

Bangladesh has experienced significant progress in expanding internet connectivity during the past decade. According to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the country now has more than 130 million internet subscriptions, driven primarily by widespread mobile broadband services. Growing competition among mobile operators and expanding fiber optic infrastructure have contributed to broader internet availability across the country.
 

International media organizations including Reuters, BBC News and CNN have reported that affordable mobile internet has become an important driver of economic development in many emerging economies. Greater connectivity enables businesses to reach new customers, students to access online education and citizens to use digital financial services and government platforms more efficiently.
 

The World Bank notes that internet access plays a critical role in reducing poverty and supporting economic growth. Small businesses increasingly rely on digital platforms for marketing and sales, while freelancers and entrepreneurs use online marketplaces to connect with international clients. Improved connectivity also supports innovation, productivity and job creation across multiple sectors.
 

Education is among the areas benefiting most from expanded internet access. UNESCO and UNICEF say affordable internet enables students to access digital classrooms, online libraries, educational videos and virtual learning platforms regardless of location. Experts argue that equal internet access is becoming an essential component of quality education in the digital era.
 

Healthcare services are also becoming more accessible through internet connectivity. Telemedicine platforms allow patients in rural communities to consult healthcare professionals remotely, while digital health applications provide information on disease prevention, vaccination schedules and medical appointments. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers digital health an important tool for improving healthcare access in underserved areas.
 

Financial inclusion has expanded alongside internet availability. Mobile banking and digital payment services have enabled millions of Bangladeshis to transfer money, pay utility bills and receive salaries without visiting bank branches. Analysts say affordable internet has been instrumental in supporting the rapid growth of the country's digital financial ecosystem.
 

Despite these achievements, experts say important challenges remain. Rural and remote communities continue to experience slower internet speeds, network congestion and limited access to high quality broadband compared with urban areas. Affordability also remains a concern for low income households, particularly when considering the combined cost of internet services and smartphones.
 

Digital literacy presents another challenge. International organizations emphasize that internet access alone does not guarantee meaningful participation in the digital economy. Citizens also require the skills to safely use online services, recognize misinformation, protect personal data and benefit from digital education and employment opportunities.
 

The Government of Bangladesh continues to invest in expanding digital infrastructure under its Smart Bangladesh vision. Initiatives led by the ICT Division and other government agencies aim to improve broadband coverage, strengthen digital public services and increase internet accessibility across the country. International partners including the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have supported projects focused on digital inclusion and rural connectivity.
 

Industry experts also highlight the growing role of emerging technologies such as fifth generation mobile networks, satellite internet and expanded fiber optic deployment. These technologies are expected to improve connection quality, reduce latency and support advanced digital services for businesses, educational institutions and healthcare providers.
 

As Bangladesh advances toward a more digitally connected economy, policymakers and technology specialists agree that affordable, reliable and secure internet access will remain fundamental to sustainable development. Continued investment in infrastructure, competitive markets, digital literacy and inclusive public policies, they say, will help ensure that every citizen can benefit from the opportunities created by the digital age.
