Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tareq Rahman has shared an emotional post on his verified Facebook page, describing how the love and support of the people of Bangladesh have made him feel as though the entire nation is his family. Rahman made these comments on January 1, 2026, following the loss of his beloved mother, Begum Khaleda Zia, and other close family members.
In his post, Tareq Rahman expressed deep sorrow and gratitude as he remembered his late father, martyr President Ziaur Rahman, and his brother Arafat Rahman Koko. He reflected on the feeling of loss, stating that the immense love he has received from the people of Bangladesh has helped him overcome the emptiness caused by losing his loved ones. He also emphasized that the people’s presence and support during this difficult time have kept him from feeling lonely.
Tareq Rahman further mentioned how, in the most painful moment of his life, he laid his mother to rest beside his father, President Ziaur Rahman. He expressed that the absence of his mother’s presence is beyond words, but the overwhelming support from people across the country reminded him that his mother was not only his own but also the "mother of the nation."
He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to foreign diplomats, top representatives from South Asia, and global diplomats who attended to pay their respects. Rahman thanked all those who extended their condolences and said that their support had deeply touched his heart.
He concluded by promising to continue the work his mother dedicated her life to, stating that he would strive to carry on her legacy with the same devotion and commitment. He added, “May Allah grant peace to my mother’s soul, and may the love, sacrifice, and generosity she exemplified guide us to find strength, unity, and patriotism.”
