US President Donald Trump says Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a temporary 10-day ceasefire following direct discussions, raising hopes for de-escalation after weeks of intense cross-border conflict.
United States President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, marking a significant diplomatic development amid ongoing hostilities in the region.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Trump said he had recently held discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to him, both leaders agreed to formally begin a ceasefire starting at 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time on Thursday.
Trump described the agreement as a step toward establishing peace between the two nations, which have been engaged in escalating tensions and cross-border violence in recent weeks.
He also highlighted recent diplomatic efforts in Washington, where representatives from both countries reportedly held rare talks for the first time in over three decades. The discussions were attended by key US officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Trump stated that senior US officials have been instructed to continue working closely with both sides to push for a long-term peace agreement beyond the temporary ceasefire.
Despite the announcement, there has been no immediate confirmation from either Israel or Lebanon regarding the ceasefire terms. Additionally, Trump’s statement did not mention Hezbollah, the Iran-backed armed group that has been actively involved in the conflict with Israeli forces.
The ceasefire announcement follows earlier indications that leaders from Israel and Lebanon were preparing to hold direct talks for the first time in decades, signaling a possible shift toward diplomacy after prolonged military escalation.
Observers say the success of the ceasefire will depend on compliance from all parties involved and whether it can pave the way for a broader and more lasting resolution to the conflict.
