A traditional polyandry marriage in Himachal Pradesh has drawn renewed attention after a woman married to two brothers gave birth to a child, sparking online discussion and mixed reactions.
A unique family structure from Himachal Pradesh, India, has returned to public attention after the birth of a baby in a household that follows the traditional “Jodidar” system of marriage.
In the Sirmaur district, Sunita Chauhan is married to two brothers, Pradeep Negi and Kapil Negi, under this long-standing local custom. The couple has now welcomed a newborn, bringing celebration within the family and renewed interest in the rare practice.
According to local reports, one of the fathers was present at home during the birth and celebrated the moment, while the other, who is currently living abroad, expressed his happiness on social media. He also shared a photograph and described the birth of the child as a life-changing moment for the family.
In his message, he said the arrival of the baby has “completed our lives” and added that he now looks forward to returning home to spend time with his family and experience fatherhood.
The post quickly went viral, triggering widespread discussion online. While some users viewed the arrangement as part of a cultural tradition still practiced in certain regions, others expressed surprise at the continuation of polyandry in modern times.
The “Jodidar” system, historically practiced in parts of Himachal Pradesh, allows two or more brothers from the same family to be married to the same woman. Although the practice has become rare in recent decades, it still exists in some rural communities.
With the birth of the child, celebrations have intensified in the family, and the story continues to attract attention on social media platforms.
