Maldives bans smoking for people born after 2006
This month, the Maldives implemented a groundbreaking anti-tobacco law, completely banning smoking for anyone born after 2006. The move aims to gradually lead the island nation toward a “tobacco-free generation.”
According to the new law, anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, will be prohibited from using, purchasing, or selling tobacco products in the Maldives. The rule applies not only to Maldivian citizens but also to foreign tourists and visitors. The country’s authorities will strictly monitor enforcement to ensure the law is applied uniformly across the nation.
Under the law, sellers must verify the buyer’s age and date of birth before selling any tobacco products. Those who violate the rules will face fines and penalties.
The government has stated that anyone born after 2006 will never be legally allowed to obtain tobacco products. This marks a new milestone in the long-term protection of public health.
As part of the new legislation, the government has also imposed strict restrictions on e-cigarettes and vaping devices. The main goal of this measure is to curb the growing use of such devices among young people and to reduce nicotine addiction.
