Moon Aligns Directly Above the Kaaba in Rare Celestial Event
The Chronify
A rare astronomical event took place in Makkah: a waning gibbous moon aligned directly above the Holy Kaaba at dawn, creating a beautiful celestial spectacle. Astrophysicist Majed Abu Zahira, head of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, said the phenomenon showcases the precision of celestial calculations, especially those involving the moon. It also offers Muslims a more exact way to determine the Qibla direction of prayer based on such alignments.
Majed Abu Zahra, head of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, told the Saudi Press Agency that the phenomenon shows how precise the calculations are for tracking celestial bodies like the moon. Because of this, Muslims worldwide will be able to determine the Qibla direction more accurately.
Abu Zahra also said that in the evening, the moon is expected to pass in front of the Pleiades star cluster Also known as the “Seven Sisters”briefly covering some of its stars one by one. This spectacular event will be visible across Saudi Arabia and many parts of the Arab world.
For the thousands of worshippers at the Holy Kaaba, this was a unique and unforgettable experience. For many, the moment held deep spiritual meaning; for astronomers, it served as a practical experiment. They compared mathematical predictions with what was observed, analyzing angles and elevations to verify their models.
Historically, observing the sun, moon, and stars to determine prayer times and the direction of the Qibla has been a significant part of Islamic astronomy. Even today, such celestial events carry both spiritual symbolism and scientific interest.
