In the United States, nearly 28 percent of people have admitted that they are involved in an “intimate or romantic” relationship with an AI chatbot.

A recent study by Vantage Point Counseling Services found that at least 54 percent of participants feel that AI now functions in their lives like a colleague, friend, or even a family member.

Among them, 28 percent reported that their relationship with AI has gone beyond friendship or collaboration, reaching an “intimate or romantic” level.

The study also revealed that many participants described their relationship with AI as platonic, professional, personal trainer, therapist, sibling, or parental-like.

The organization noted that people reported such relationships with at least 30 different AI platforms, with ChatGPT being the most popular, followed by Apple’s Siri and Google Gemini among the top five.

According to Vantage, the trend of forming relationships with AI chatbots has become more noticeable since the Institute of Family Studies highlighted the decline of real human relationships in the U.S.

Real-life examples also exist last June, one individual proposed marriage to their AI partner after nearly 100,000 words of conversation, despite having a real-life partner and child at the time.

The report further stated that 37.55 percent of participants are not currently seeking human relationships or have experienced failures in the past. 33.69 percent said they are currently cheating on a human partner or are in casual relationships.

Additionally, 19.30 percent said they are not in any human intimate or romantic relationship at the moment but are looking for one or more partners.

Researchers believe that technology-driven loneliness and the weakening of human relationships are rapidly increasing the tendency to form bonds with AI.
