Following President Vladimir Putin’s directive, the Kremlin the office of the Russian President is working on a proposal to conduct a nuclear weapons test. This has been confirmed by the country’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov.
The New York Post reported the information, citing the country’s state media.
Earlier last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States would resume nuclear testing for the first time in three decades. In response, Russia decided to conduct its own nuclear tests.
Lavrov told reporters, “At the Security Council meeting on November 5, President Vladimir Putin gave instructions to carry this out, and preparations are underway. The public will be informed of the results.”
He further said, “Moscow has not received a clear message on whether Trump was referring to tests involving nuclear warheads or the so-called subcritical tests. Perhaps Donald Trump was indeed talking about Washington’s intention to resume full-scale nuclear testing.”
Last week, Trump stated that he wanted to keep pace with Russia and China. On Truth Social, he wrote, “Because of the testing programs of other countries, I have directed the Department of Defense to begin our nuclear weapons testing on an equal basis. This process will begin immediately.”
The United States has not conducted a nuclear weapons test since 1992, having observed a voluntary moratorium on such exercises. Since then, only North Korea has been confirmed to have carried out nuclear tests. However, in recent years, China is also believed to have secretly conducted small-scale weapons tests.
