Man Detained With Nearly 7kg Gold Near Chuadanga Border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained a suspected gold smuggler after recovering nearly 7kg of gold bars near the Darshana border in Chuadanga, officials said on Saturday.

According to a press release issued by BGB, the seized consignment consisted of 39 gold bars weighing a total of 6.968 kilograms. The estimated market value of the gold is Tk13.32 crore.

The detainee was identified as 34-year-old Rabiul Islam, a resident of Chhoygharia village in Darshana.


BGB's Chuadanga Battalion, also known as 6 BGB, launched the operation after receiving intelligence that a large quantity of gold was being prepared for smuggling into India through the Parkestopur border area.

Acting on the information, a BGB patrol team conducted surveillance in the area. At around 4:20pm, the patrol intercepted a man travelling towards the border on a motorcycle.


BGB personnel subsequently searched the man and allegedly discovered the gold bars in his possession. The operation resulted in the recovery of 39 bars of different sizes, according to the force.


The motorcycle allegedly used to transport the gold was also seized. In addition, BGB recovered a feature phone and Tk140 in cash from the detainee.

During preliminary questioning, Rabiul allegedly told BGB officials that he had been carrying the gold with the intention of smuggling it into India.

The incident highlights continuing efforts by border authorities to prevent the illegal movement of gold and other goods across Bangladesh's frontier. Gold smuggling remains a significant concern along several border areas, particularly routes connected to neighbouring India.

Following the seizure, the recovered gold is being handed over to the Chuadanga Treasury Office for further proceedings. The detainee and the seized motorcycle are being transferred to Darshana Police Station.

Authorities said a case would be filed against the detainee in connection with the alleged smuggling attempt.

Chuadanga Battalion Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Nazmul Hasan said BGB would continue conducting operations against gold smuggling and other forms of cross-border crime.

He also said the force would maintain its efforts to strengthen security and preserve law and order along the border.

The latest seizure comes as BGB continues intelligence-led operations to identify and disrupt smuggling networks operating along Bangladesh's border areas. Officials say such operations are intended not only to recover illegally transported goods but also to prevent organised cross-border criminal activities.

The recovered quantity of gold, valued at more than Tk13 crore, makes the seizure a significant operation for the local border authorities. Further legal action will depend on the investigation and proceedings following the handover of the detainee to police.

Authorities are expected to investigate the source of the gold, its intended recipient and whether other individuals or groups were involved in the alleged smuggling attempt.

BGB said its operations along the frontier would continue to prevent illegal trafficking and strengthen security in border communities.
