Bangladesh moves closer to nuclear power era as first unit enters fuel loading phase with trial electricity expected by August
Bangladesh is set to achieve a major milestone in its energy sector as the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant begins loading nuclear fuel from April 28. The development marks a crucial transition from construction to operational readiness, paving the way for carbon-free electricity generation in the country.
Experts describe the fuel loading process as one of the most significant stages in launching a nuclear power facility. It involves placing low-enriched uranium fuel assemblies into the reactor core, which will eventually initiate controlled nuclear reactions required for power generation.
The plant’s Unit-1, equipped with a 1,200-megawatt VVER-1200 reactor, is expected to play a key role in meeting Bangladesh’s growing energy demand while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Officials confirmed that all necessary safety checks, regulatory approvals, and preparatory tests have been completed prior to this stage.
The nuclear fuel, composed of uranium dioxide pellets, offers high energy output with minimal carbon emissions. Each pellet, though small in size, can generate energy equivalent to a large quantity of conventional fuels like coal.
Authorities emphasized that strict international safety protocols will be followed throughout the process, with trained personnel and advanced monitoring systems ensuring safe handling and operation.
The Rooppur project is Bangladesh’s first venture into nuclear energy and is expected to significantly enhance long-term energy security. Once fully operational, the plant will provide a stable and sustainable power source for decades, marking a transformative step in the nation’s energy landscape.
