Meherpur Drowning Tragedy: Four Schoolchildren Lose Their Lives in Wetland Accident

The Chronify

On Sunday afternoon, the community of Meherpur Sadar upazila was shaken by a heartbreaking tragedy. Four schoolchildren, all from the same family, drowned in a local wetland while attempting to pick water lilies. Their deaths have left their families and the local community in deep sorrow.

The tragic drowning occurred around 5:15 pm at Mominpur Beel, when the four girls—Fatema and Mim, both eighth-graders, and Rafia and Aliya, both in fourth grade—went to the wetland to collect water lilies. They were the daughters of two brothers, Mojibur Rahman and Shaharul Islam, residents of the area.

After several hours without any sign of the girls returning home, their family launched a search. The girls' bodies were later discovered floating in the water. Fire service and police teams arrived quickly at the scene and recovered the bodies. Shamim Hossain, leader of the Fire Service Team, confirmed that three bodies were initially found, while a fourth child was later located in a deep pit within the beel.

According to local authorities, the children likely fell into a deep hole while picking flowers. None of the children could swim, which led to the fatal outcome. Meherpur Sadar Police Station’s OC Mesbah Uddin stated that the uneven depth of the water was a contributing factor.

Authorities have offered initial financial assistance for the funerals of the four victims, and local officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Tarikul Islam and Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sumaiya Jahan Zukor, visited the site to console the grieving family.

The entire Mominpur area remains in mourning after the devastating loss of four young lives, a tragedy that has shocked the local community.
