Soybean or Mustard Oil - Which Is Healthier?

Choosing the right cooking oil is crucial for reducing long-term cancer risk. Cooking oil doesn’t just enhance flavor - it also has a significant impact on our health. The type of oil we use can influence cell structure, hormone balance, and inflammation levels in the body, all of which play key roles in cancer prevention.

Regarding this, Mohammad Arif Iqbal, Consultant Dietitian and Nutritionist at Al-Hayat Hospital and Diagnostic Center, said that olive oil and mustard oil are the most beneficial for cancer prevention. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, antioxidants, vitamin E, and polyphenols, which protect body cells from oxidative damage and slow the growth of cancerous cells. Regular use of olive oil can help prevent breast, colon, and skin cancer.
 

He added that mustard oil contains a compound called allyl isothiocyanate, which suppresses the growth of cancer cells and helps eliminate harmful toxins from the body. This oil is particularly effective in reducing the risk of lung, stomach, and colon cancer. Mustard oil also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, protecting cells from long-term damage.
 

According to Arif Iqbal, soybean oil is not entirely bad either. It contains polyunsaturated fatty acids that help lower the risk of heart disease and increase good cholesterol. However, when heated for long periods at high temperatures, its structure can break down and form trans fats, which trigger inflammation and increase cancer risk.
 

He further emphasized that moderation is key. Excessive use of any oil can disrupt calorie balance, cause weight gain, insulin resistance, and even increase the risk of hormone-related cancers. Therefore, instead of relying on one type of oil, alternating between olive, mustard, and soybean oil can provide the body with balanced nutrition and protection.
