Earthquakes can strike unexpectedly, varying in intensity. While some may cause devastation, others might only generate fear and anxiety. Regardless of the impact, earthquakes serve as a reminder from Allah, urging people to return to Him in repentance, improve their behavior, and seek His forgiveness.

Why Earthquakes Occur:
Earthquakes are natural phenomena caused by the sudden release of energy stored in the earth's crust, resulting in seismic activity. Geologists attribute them to three primary causes: tectonic, volcanic, and landslide-induced movements. From an Islamic perspective, these calamities are often seen as consequences of human wrongdoing, emphasizing the need for repentance.

Islamic Perspective on Earthquakes:
In Islam, natural disasters like earthquakes are considered signs of Allah's warning to humankind. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned that such occurrences are linked to societal corruption. He warned of increasing earthquakes as signs of a society’s moral decay, where people would become negligent in their duties and increase in their sinful actions.

Quranic Verses Regarding Earthquakes:
The Quran mentions earthquakes in the context of Allah's signs of warning. Allah says in Surah Bani Isra'il (17:59), "We send signs to warn them," and in Surah An'am (6:65), Allah states, "Say, 'Allah is capable of sending you punishment from above you or from beneath your feet.'"

Dua to Recite During Earthquakes:
During an earthquake, Muslims are encouraged to recite the dua of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him), which was offered during times of distress. This prayer is considered a powerful supplication in moments of danger.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
Transliteration: "La ilaha illa Anta Subhanaka Inni Kuntu Minaz-Zalimin."
Meaning: "There is no deity but You, Glory be to You, Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

Actions to Take During an Earthquake:
Along with reciting this dua, Muslims are encouraged to show compassion towards the poor and the needy. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised, “Show mercy, and you will be shown mercy.” (Musnad Ahmad)

Additionally, historical records show that during times of calamity, Caliph Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (RA) would urge his governors to increase charitable acts. Further, social justice, including the prevention of corruption and immorality, is seen as essential for protection from such disasters.

Repentance and Seeking Allah's Forgiveness:
Islamic teachings highlight the importance of repentance in times of disaster. Allah says in Surah A'raf (7:96), "Had the people of those towns believed and been God-fearing, We would have opened up to them blessings from the heavens and the earth. But they denied [their prophets], and so We seized them for their deeds."

In times of earthquakes, eclipses, floods, or strong winds, Muslims are advised to seek Allah’s protection, repent for their wrongdoings, and turn to Him in sincere supplication. Recognizing Allah's signs and seeking His forgiveness can provide safety and protection during times of calamity.
