Bangladesh's Monon Reza Neer Defeats Three Straight Grandmasters to Lead Hungary Chess Tournament

Bangladesh's International Master (IM) Monon Reza Neer has continued his impressive run at the Six Days Grandmaster B Chess Tournament in Hungary, climbing to the top of the standings after a series of remarkable victories against higher-rated opponents.

After five rounds of competition, Neer leads the tournament outright with 4.5 points, strengthening his bid to earn a Grandmaster (GM) norm one of the most significant milestones in a professional chess player's career.

The Bangladeshi chess star began his campaign with a confident victory over American FIDE Master Lucas Lucikas in the opening round, giving him a strong start in the international event.


In the second round, Neer held India's FIDE Master Arav Sinha to a draw, maintaining his unbeaten record before producing an outstanding sequence of victories that transformed his tournament.


His breakthrough came in the third round, where he defeated Greece's Grandmaster Potes Hagen in a crucial encounter. The result marked his first victory over a Grandmaster in the competition and significantly boosted his position in the standings.

Neer followed up that performance with another impressive win in the fourth round, overcoming France's Woman Grandmaster Mehmet. The victory further demonstrated his consistency against experienced international opponents and kept his title ambitions firmly on track.


The Bangladeshi player extended his winning streak in the fifth round by defeating Hungarian Grandmaster David Berkes, securing his third consecutive victory over a Grandmaster. The result propelled him into sole possession of first place with 4.5 points from five games.


The outstanding performance has placed Neer within touching distance of achieving a Grandmaster norm. According to tournament calculations, he now requires only 2.5 points from his remaining four matches to meet the performance requirement for the prestigious title norm.
