Chip giant explores financing support for a massive Ohio data centre as OpenAI accelerates plans to build its own AI computing network.

Nvidia is reportedly in discussions with OpenAI over a financing arrangement that could support one of the largest artificial intelligence infrastructure projects ever planned, reinforcing the growing partnership between the two companies.

According to reports, Nvidia is considering providing financial guarantees worth approximately $250 billion to help OpenAI secure a long-term lease for a massive data centre under development in Piketon, Ohio. The facility is being built by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank, and is expected to become one of the world's largest AI computing hubs.

The proposed project is estimated to cost more than $500 billion when the computing hardware is included. The financing guarantee would primarily support the lease agreement, while Nvidia is also reportedly discussing additional arrangements related to the purchase of AI chips that could be worth another $350 billion.

The Ohio campus is designed to deliver up to 800 megawatts of computing power by 2028, enough electricity to supply roughly 640,000 homes. The facility's energy needs are expected to be supported through a separate $33 billion US-backed natural gas power project developed in cooperation with Japan.

OpenAI has been aggressively expanding its computing infrastructure as demand for generative AI services continues to surge. The company currently relies heavily on cloud providers, including Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle, but is increasingly pursuing dedicated AI infrastructure to support future growth.

Reports indicate that OpenAI is considering a long-term lease that would allow it to control both the equipment installed inside the facility and the operation of the computing infrastructure over the coming decades.

The project is also expected to strengthen Ohio's position as one of the leading data centre hubs in the United States. The state already hosts more than 160 operational data centres, with dozens more currently under development.

Despite the ambitious plans, analysts have raised questions about the financial sustainability of such large-scale investments. OpenAI remains unprofitable despite its high market valuation, while many companies involved in supplying AI infrastructure continue to carry significant debt.

Industry experts argue that the growing financial ties between AI developers and hardware suppliers illustrate how closely interconnected the sector has become. Nvidia, whose advanced graphics processors power much of today's AI industry, has increasingly invested in expanding the ecosystem that depends on its chips.

Critics, however, warn that financing arrangements between technology companies and their customers could create concerns about long-term market stability if future AI demand fails to match current expectations.

Even so, Nvidia continues to benefit from unprecedented global demand for AI processors, while OpenAI remains focused on building the computing capacity needed to support future generations of artificial intelligence models.

If completed, the Ohio project would mark another major milestone in the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure and further deepen the strategic relationship between Nvidia, OpenAI and SoftBank as competition in the global AI industry intensifies.
