An Instagram post by a content creator named Louis Ganson has gone viral. The post was titled, “I asked a pickpocket who they target. After hearing the answer, I immediately changed my jacket.” The post has already received 12 million views.

He shared that he recently spoke with a pickpocket. Louis asked the pickpocket who they usually target. After knowing the answer, you might think twice about your clothing before going out.

You might assume that pickpockets target those who appear wealthy. In reality, pickpockets usually go after people from whom stealing is easiest. They don’t focus on whether someone looks rich; instead, they look for the most inattentive individuals. Here’s who pickpockets typically target:

  1. People distracted by their phones
Constantly checking phones or walking while absorbed in them means your attention is elsewhere. Pickpockets exploit these vulnerable moments.

  2. Those with wallets in back pockets or bags with open chains
Keeping valuables in back pockets is like silently inviting pickpockets. An open bag chain is seen as “free for the taking.” According to the pickpocket interviewed by Louis, failing to steal in such cases is their own failure.

  3. People who appear worried or confused
Being preoccupied makes you less aware of your surroundings, making you an easy target.

  4. Those who are always busy or in a hurry
Rushing prevents awareness of the surroundings, which pickpockets exploit.

  5. People wearing loose clothing or jackets
Loose clothes make it easy to slip a hand in and grab items without the victim noticing.

  6. Those who touch their valuables in public
This signals to thieves exactly where your items are.

  7. People inattentive even in a group Being careless in a crowd is a perfect opportunity.

Even if others are nearby, inattentive individuals often don’t notice the theft until long after it happens, giving pickpockets time to escape safely.
