Tom Holland Says Marvel Has a Plan for the Next Spider-Man

Tom Holland has confirmed that Marvel already has a long-term plan for the eventual transition from his version of Spider-Man to another actor, even as he celebrates the latest chapter of his journey as Peter Parker.

Holland recently returned to cinemas as the web-slinging superhero in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which was released on July 31. However, while promoting the film, the 30-year-old actor also spoke about what will happen when his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe eventually comes to an end.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland said discussions about his eventual departure began shortly after the completion of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.


According to Holland, the transition has already been carefully considered, although he acknowledged that the plan could change as the franchise develops.


He said the future of the character has been mapped out and that he has a clear idea of how the responsibility of portraying Spider-Man could eventually be handed to another performer.


Rather than expressing concern about being replaced, Holland said he is enthusiastic about being involved in conversations concerning the character's long-term future.


The actor explained that helping determine how Spider-Man's story and legacy could continue has become one of the aspects of playing the character that interests him most.

Holland's comments suggest that Marvel is considering Spider-Man beyond his current tenure, although no successor has been officially identified or announced.


The British actor first appeared as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. He subsequently became the central star of a new series of Spider-Man films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and appeared alongside several of the franchise's biggest characters.

Holland is the third actor to play Peter Parker in major live-action theatrical films, following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Both previous actors have also returned to the role in different Spider-Man projects, contributing to the character's long-running cinematic legacy.

As Holland considers the future, he has also expressed interest in helping the next actor who eventually takes over the role.


The actor previously told Esquire that he would like to mentor Spider-Man's next performer, drawing on the support he received from Robert Downey Jr during his early years in the Marvel franchise.


Downey played an important mentoring figure for Holland during his first three Spider-Man appearances and his introduction to the wider Marvel universe. Holland now hopes to provide a similar form of guidance to whoever eventually inherits the role.


For fans, Holland's remarks offer a glimpse into how the Spider-Man franchise could evolve after his tenure. While his immediate focus remains on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, his comments indicate that conversations about the superhero's longer-term future are already taking place.

The actor has not suggested that he is leaving the role immediately. Instead, his comments focus on planning for a future transition that could happen after his time as Peter Parker eventually concludes.

For now, Holland remains the face of Spider-Man in the current chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
