Pilot project to begin in July aiming to boost jute industry and promote eco-friendly alternatives
The government has announced a new initiative to distribute jute-made school bags and uniforms among primary school students across Bangladesh, as part of efforts to support local industries and reduce environmental pollution.
The decision was finalised at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on April 22. Officials from the Ministries of Primary and Mass Education, Textiles and Jute, and Local Government were present at the meeting.
According to officials, the programme will initially be launched as a pilot project covering two primary schools in each upazila. The rollout is expected to begin in July, with approximately 100,000 students set to receive free jute school bags and uniforms in the first month.
Authorities said local administrations will be responsible for selecting the schools for the pilot phase. The programme will gradually be expanded to include all primary-level students across the country.
The initiative has been taken to revive the country’s traditional jute industry while addressing the growing concerns over environmental pollution caused by plastic products. Officials noted that promoting jute-based materials will help reduce dependency on polythene and encourage sustainable practices.
Government representatives also highlighted that the move aligns with the broader goal of promoting “Made in Bangladesh” products. In addition to supporting local manufacturing, the programme is expected to foster a sense of equality among students by ensuring access to uniform school supplies.
The initiative will be jointly implemented by the relevant ministries, with authorities expressing optimism that it will contribute both to economic development and environmental protection.
