‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Crosses $1 Billion in 18 Days, Global Excitement Soars
The Chronify
James Cameron’s latest installment in the Avatar series makes history by crossing the $1 billion mark within just 18 days of its release.
In a spectacular achievement for the film industry, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" has surpassed $1 billion in global earnings just 18 days after its worldwide release. The film has grossed a total of $1.83 billion so far, with $306 million earned in North America and $777.1 million from international markets.
The highest earnings have come from China ($138 million), France ($81 million), Germany ($64 million), and South Korea ($44 million). However, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" has achieved this milestone at a slower pace compared to its predecessors, with the 2022 release "Avatar: The Way of Water" hitting $1 billion in just 14 days, and the original "Avatar" reaching the milestone in 17 days in 2009.
Despite the slower pace, both the first and second films in the franchise went on to rule the box office for several weeks, becoming some of the highest-grossing films in history. The first "Avatar" earned $2.9 billion, while its sequel grossed $2.3 billion.
As for the possibility of reaching $2 billion, it remains uncertain. The success of the film largely depends on the performance in international markets, where previous installments saw significant contributions. The first "Avatar" earned $2.1 billion from international markets alone, while "The Way of Water" earned $1.65 billion internationally.
In another milestone for Disney, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" is the third film from the studio in 2025 to surpass the $1 billion mark. Earlier in the year, both "Lilo & Stitch" and "Zootopia 2" also crossed this threshold. Notably, no other studio has released a $1 billion film since 2023.
This marks a golden year for Disney, as the studio has surpassed $6.58 billion in global earnings for the year, continuing to outperform competitors by at least $2 billion at the box office.
Directed by James Cameron, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" continues the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), as they confront a new adversary. Cameron, now the only filmmaker with three films that have grossed over $2 billion each, has hinted that "Avatar 4" and "Avatar 5" may not come to fruition, depending on the success of this third installment. As Cameron humorously mentioned, "We may have rushed to talk about 'Avatar 4' — we need to make money with this film first."
