Pakistan and Iran are jointly producing a biographical film on Allama Iqbal
Pakistan and Iran are joining forces to produce a work on the life of the world-renowned philosopher and poet Allama Iqbal. During a meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ataullah Tarar, discussed the details of this joint project with Iranian media representatives.
At the meeting, Pakistan’s various television channels, a film production company, officials from PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority), and the Iranian ambassador were present.
According to a report by the Pakistan Press Agency, the Minister expressed his delight at the proposal, noting that a joint drama produced in both Iranian and Urdu languages would serve as a symbol of cultural bonding between the two countries. The discussion highlighted Allama Iqbal’s poetry, which has had a profound influence in both Pakistan and Iran. Despite the passage of time, his poems and works remain highly relevant.
Five memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed during the meeting, covering technical collaboration, skill development, and content exchange.
Earlier, the Pakistani government had also indicated plans for a joint drama on Allama Iqbal’s life. On August 8 of this year, Pakistan’s Ministry of Planning released a statement marking Iqbal’s 150th birth anniversary (2027), noting that Iran had already shown interest in producing a film on his life and works, along with plans for a high-quality television drama series.
One of Pakistan’s recent joint productions was a historical series on Salahuddin Ayyubi, created collaboratively by Pakistan’s HUM TV and Turkey’s state broadcaster TRT. Broadcast in 2024, the series featured Turkish actors and included Pakistani producers Humayun Saeed and Adnan Siddiqui.
Another historical drama is currently in production in Pakistan, focusing on the life of Fatima Jinnah, sister of the country’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah, with popular actress Sajjal Ali in the lead role. Although filming has been completed, the release date has not yet been announced.
It has been reported that Usman Mukhtar will portray Allama Iqbal in the upcoming series.
