Award-winning Northern Irish actor Michael Campbell, who performed Richard III from a wheelchair while living with motor neurone disease, has died, prompting widespread tributes.
Tributes have been paid to actor Michael Campbell, also known as Michael Patrick, following his death at the age of 35 after battling motor neurone disease (MND).
Campbell, who was diagnosed with the terminal illness in February 2023, died on Tuesday at the Northern Ireland Hospice.
His wife Naomi described him in a social media post as a “titan of a ginger haired man,” saying the family was heartbroken by his passing. She added that he lived “a life as full as any human can live,” and remembered him for his “joy, abundance of spirit, and infectious laughter.”
Campbell gained widespread recognition for his powerful stage performance as Richard III, which he performed in a wheelchair while living with MND. His portrayal earned him one of the UK theatre industry’s top honours, the Judges’ Award at The Stage Awards, held at London’s Royal Opera House.
The Lyric Theatre Belfast, where he performed the role, said it was devastated by his death, calling him a remarkable artist whose performance was “legendary” and one of the greatest ever seen on its stage.
Executive producer Jimmy Fay said Campbell’s work left a lasting legacy, adding that “these islands have lost a great artist.”
Fellow collaborators also paid tribute. Writer Oisín Kearney, who worked closely with Campbell, described him as “an actor of epic proportions,” praising his ability to balance humour and tragedy while creating deeply human performances.
Campbell had spoken publicly about his diagnosis and continued to work creatively even as his condition progressed. He had revealed that he chose not to undergo a tracheostomy in order to spend his remaining time outside hospital care.
Motor neurone disease is a rare condition that affects the nerves controlling movement, leading to progressive weakness and reduced life expectancy. There is currently no cure, though treatments can help manage symptoms.
Campbell’s work, including his adaptation of The Tragedy of Richard III, has been widely praised for its emotional depth and its honest portrayal of disability, leaving a significant impact on UK theatre and beyond.
