Health Risks of Drinking Excess Water
The Chronify
Water is essential for our bodies. Doctors recommend drinking enough water every day. However, just as water is necessary for health, experts warn that drinking too much of it can also be harmful. Excessive water intake can disrupt the balance of vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes in the body. This may lead to problems such as dizziness, fainting, or weakness.
The primary function of the kidneys is to filter blood and remove waste from the body. However, when too much water enters the body at once, it puts extra pressure on the kidneys. As a result, the sodium level in the body can drop abnormally.
This sodium deficiency caused by excessive water intake is called hyponatremia. It can lead to symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. In severe cases, there is also a risk of seizures.
Doctors say that the idea that "drinking more water is always better" is a misconception. Instead, water should be consumed according to the body’s thirst signals. In short, it is important to develop the habit of “smart hydration.”
Just as excessive water is unnecessary for the body, it can also be harmful. Therefore, along with drinking water according to the body’s needs, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly if any problems arise.
