Trivedi Says Bangladesh-India Issues Can Be Resolved Through Mutual Understanding, Eyes PM Tarique’s India Visit

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has expressed confidence that all outstanding issues between Bangladesh and India can be resolved through mutual understanding, saying the anticipated visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India could pave the way for constructive progress in bilateral relations.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday after separate courtesy meetings with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, Trivedi described the discussions as positive and productive.

He said the meetings reflected the warm and longstanding relationship between the two neighboring countries, adding that there was no issue that could not be addressed through dialogue and cooperation.

According to the Indian envoy, both sides are committed to maintaining a relationship that benefits the people of Bangladesh and India alike. He noted that the two nations share deep historical, cultural and social ties, which continue to serve as the foundation of their partnership.

Trivedi also expressed optimism regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India. He said New Delhi is looking forward to welcoming the Bangladeshi prime minister and remains hopeful that the visit will take place in the near future.

Responding to questions about the invitations extended to the Bangladeshi premier from India, the high commissioner said the decision ultimately rests with the prime minister. However, he stressed that India remains eager to host the visit and believes it would create opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

On unresolved bilateral matters, including the renewal of the Teesta and Ganges water-sharing arrangements, Trivedi said both countries already have established working groups responsible for discussing such issues. He said those mechanisms would continue to function and contribute to finding mutually acceptable solutions.

The envoy emphasized that dialogue remains the most effective path to resolving differences and expressed confidence that discussions at both the technical and political levels would continue in a constructive manner.

He said the meetings held at the foreign ministry reflected a shared willingness to deepen engagement across multiple sectors. Beyond diplomatic and political cooperation, Trivedi highlighted the historical connections between the two countries, pointing to shared cultural traditions, sporting links and people-to-people exchanges.

According to him, Bangladesh and India not only share a common border but also a rich historical relationship that continues to influence cooperation in various fields. He added that both countries should continue working together in ways that promote mutual prosperity and regional stability.

Senior officials from the Indian High Commission, including Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe, also attended the meetings.

Trivedi formally assumed his responsibilities as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh after presenting his credentials to the President of Bangladesh on June 25. During that occasion, he conveyed greetings from the government and people of India while reaffirming New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening the multifaceted partnership between the two countries.

The diplomatic engagement comes as India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13. Bangladesh has received an official invitation for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the summit, which will focus on international cooperation, trade, innovation and sustainable development.

Earlier, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had received the invitation from the Indian government and subsequently forwarded it to the Prime Minister’s Office for consideration.

She also reiterated Bangladesh’s position on regional affairs, saying the country remains committed to peace and stability in South Asia. According to the state minister, Bangladesh expects neighboring countries to address bilateral concerns through dialogue while respecting democratic values and the interests of their respective citizens.

This year's BRICS Summit will be held under India's chairmanship with the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability." The grouping has gradually expanded its agenda beyond economic cooperation to include political dialogue, security, trade, climate action, energy, agriculture and people-to-people exchanges.

Observers believe that if Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attends the summit and undertakes an official bilateral visit to India, it could provide fresh momentum to discussions on longstanding issues while opening new avenues for economic, diplomatic and regional cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
