An Air Canada Express regional jet arriving from Montreal collided with a ground vehicle while landing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport late Sunday, forcing authorities to halt airport operations and divert or turn back incoming flights. The aircraft was a CRJ 900 operated by Jazz Aviation, Air Canada’s regional partner.

Emergency crews responded after the incident, which was reported shortly before midnight local time. New York fire officials said they were handling an event involving a plane and a vehicle on the runway, while police confirmed the collision with a Port Authority vehicle. Authorities did not immediately release confirmed details on injuries or the cause of the crash.

Federal regulators issued a ground stop for LaGuardia, citing an emergency. The initial closure was listed through 0530 GMT, with a high chance of extension, and a separate aviation notice indicated the shutdown could last until 1800 GMT. Airport information showed that arriving aircraft were being diverted to other airports or sent back to their points of origin.

Flight tracking data indicated the plane was moving at about 24 miles per hour, or 39 kilometres per hour, at the time of impact. Images circulating online appeared to show heavy damage to the aircraft’s nose, but those visuals were not independently verified in early reporting.

The incident comes as LaGuardia and other airports in the New York area were already dealing with weather related disruption, adding to expected delays and cancellations for travelers overnight and into Monday.
