Bangladesh Navy's missile-equipped frigate, Banooja Khalid Bin Walid, is set for a significant upgrade through a government-to-government agreement with Turkey, worth 650 crore taka.

In a strategic move to enhance maritime security, the Bangladesh government has decided to upgrade the Banooja Khalid Bin Walid, a missile-equipped frigate of the Bangladesh Navy. The upgrade, estimated to cost around 650 crore taka, will be implemented under a Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement with Turkey.

This initiative is in line with Bangladesh's efforts to assert its control over the country's maritime boundaries, ensure the safety of commercial shipping lanes, and strengthen its naval presence in the Indian Ocean. Given the current geopolitical challenges, maintaining effective maritime dominance and security is crucial for Bangladesh, particularly in both peaceful and wartime scenarios.

According to documents from the Office of the Prime Minister's Advisor, the upgraded ship will significantly enhance surveillance capabilities and secure strategic waterways. As part of the plan, advanced technology and weapon systems will be integrated into the ship to improve its operational efficiency, combat readiness, and security measures.

The Bangladesh Navy has made significant strides in expanding its fleet over the past decade. However, many of the vessels are aging, with some ships being 25 to 30 years old. The upgrade of the Banooja Khalid Bin Walid is a vital step to modernize the fleet and address contemporary security challenges in the region.

This upgrade will not only improve the ship’s operational effectiveness but also strengthen Bangladesh’s overall naval capabilities, securing its position as a key maritime player in the region.
