Beijing warns citizens against traveling to Japan
Comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Taiwan are stirring tensions. Amid this situation, China has urged its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan. It has also summoned the Japanese ambassador in Beijing and delivered a strong protest.
According to the BBC, after Takaichi hinted that Japan could respond with its Self-Defense Forces if China attacks Taiwan, the war of words between the two countries has intensified in recent days.
The foreign ministries of both countries have also lodged formal protests with each other. A Chinese envoy made remarks so harsh that many believe they implied a threat to “cut off Takaichi’s head.”
On Tuesday, Takaichi refused to withdraw her comments, saying what she stated was consistent with Japan’s “long-standing policy.” She added that she would be more cautious when commenting on specific situations going forward.
Later, on Thursday, China’s foreign ministry posted in Japanese and English on X, telling Japan to “stop playing with fire.”
And on Friday night, Japan’s embassy in China issued a statement urging its citizens to “avoid traveling to Japan in the near future.”
