A Bangladeshi expatriate businessman from Noakhali was shot dead in South Africa's Port Elizabeth, while his five-year-old daughter was injured during the attack, according to family members.

A Bangladeshi businessman living in South Africa was shot and killed in an apparent armed attack outside his home in the city of Port Elizabeth, while his five-year-old daughter sustained injuries during the incident, family members said.

The fatal shooting occurred at around 6:30pm local time on Tuesday (7 July), bringing fresh concern over the safety of Bangladeshi expatriates engaged in business activities in South Africa.

The victim was identified as Md Yasin, 40, a resident of Kanchanpur village under Kadir Hanif Union in Noakhali Sadar Upazila. He was the son of Md Sujayet Ullah.

According to family members, Yasin had been living in South Africa for approximately 16 years, where he established a business and owned a residence. About a year ago, he relocated his family to South Africa so they could live together.

His younger brother, Md Nasir, said the attack took place as Yasin was returning home after closing his business for the day.

According to the family's account, unidentified armed assailants opened fire on him near the entrance of his residence. Yasin suffered critical gunshot wounds and died at the scene before emergency assistance could save him.

During the shooting, his five-year-old daughter, Farhana, was also injured. Family members said she received medical treatment following the incident. However, no further details regarding the extent of her injuries or her current condition were immediately available.

The motive behind the attack has not yet been confirmed, and authorities in South Africa have launched an investigation to identify those responsible.

The killing has left relatives and members of Yasin's hometown in Noakhali in mourning. Local residents described him as a successful expatriate entrepreneur who had spent many years building his business abroad while maintaining close ties with his family in Bangladesh.

Officials in Bangladesh have also acknowledged the incident.

Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kamrul Islam of Sudharam Model Police Station said local authorities had been informed of the expatriate's death.

He stated that the relevant authorities would remain in contact with the victim's family and provide necessary assistance as required.

The incident once again highlights the security challenges faced by some Bangladeshi expatriates working and operating businesses overseas. South Africa hosts a sizeable Bangladeshi community, many of whom are involved in retail and small business enterprises.

Over the years, several Bangladeshi nationals have been victims of robberies, armed attacks and violent crimes in different parts of South Africa, prompting repeated calls from community leaders for enhanced security measures and stronger cooperation between local authorities and diplomatic missions.

The Bangladeshi High Commission is expected to coordinate with South African authorities regarding the investigation and assist the victim's family with any necessary consular support, including arrangements related to the repatriation of the body if requested by the family.

As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, relatives in Bangladesh are awaiting further updates while mourning the loss of a family member whose life was cut short in a tragic act of violence abroad.
