BGB Says It Foiled Attempted Push-Ins from India via Sundarbans River Routes

Border Guard Bangladesh reports it blocked multiple alleged attempts by India’s Border Security Force to push groups of people into Bangladesh through river routes along the Sundarbans coast in Satkhira.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has claimed it successfully foiled multiple attempts by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to push groups of men, women, and children into Bangladesh through river routes along the Sundarbans coastal border area.
According to the BGB’s 17 Battalion headquarters, the incidents took place between June 8 and the early hours of June 10 in border areas under its jurisdiction in Satkhira. Officials said personnel from India’s BSF 74 and 77 battalions allegedly gathered around 15 to 20 individuals and attempted to cross them into Bangladesh through several points, including waterways along the border.
BGB officials stated that heightened surveillance and rapid response operations prevented the alleged crossings from being successful. The border force maintained that no unauthorized individuals were allowed to enter Bangladeshi territory during the incidents.
The Sundarbans region, known for its complex river networks and dense mangrove forest, has long been considered a challenging area for border management. Security personnel from both countries regularly conduct patrols in the area due to its vulnerability to illegal crossings, smuggling activities, and human trafficking risks.
Lieutenant Colonel Shahariar Rajib, commanding officer of the 17 BGB Battalion, said the force remains on high alert to prevent any unauthorized entry attempts. He emphasized that strict measures are being enforced to secure the border and maintain territorial integrity.
“No individual or group will be allowed to enter Bangladesh territory illegally. Push-in attempts are being strictly resisted,” he said, adding that the border force anticipates the possibility of further attempts and has strengthened patrol operations accordingly.
He further noted that night patrols have been intensified across riverine routes and adjacent border points. According to him, loud announcements and whistles were used during patrols to signal readiness and warn against any unauthorized movement across the border.
The BGB also indicated that coordination and monitoring efforts have been increased in sensitive areas to ensure continuous surveillance of river channels and remote crossings. Officials say additional personnel have been deployed in vulnerable locations to respond quickly to any further incidents.
There has been no immediate public response from India’s Border Security Force regarding the allegations.
Border incidents between the two countries occasionally occur in densely forested and riverine areas such as the Sundarbans, where geographical complexity often complicates enforcement operations. Authorities on both sides have previously engaged in dialogue to manage border-related issues and maintain stability along the international boundary.
As patrols continue, the BGB maintains that it remains committed to preventing any unauthorized movement across the border and safeguarding national security in the coastal frontier region.
