A tragic accident in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district sparked outrage after onlookers looted fish from a crashed pickup truck while the body of a 13-year-old student lay on the roadside.

Ritesh Kumar, 13, also known as Golu, a seventh-grade student, was on his way to morning coaching classes when he was struck by a speeding pickup truck near Jhajhihat village under the jurisdiction of Pupri Police Station. Ritesh, the son of Santosh Das, died instantly due to the impact of the collision.

According to local accounts, the crash caused chaos at the scene, and the boy’s family rushed there after hearing screams, only to find him lifeless on the road. However, while the family mourned, a disturbing scene unfolded nearby.

The pickup truck involved in the accident was carrying a large consignment of fish, which spilled onto the road following the crash. Instead of helping the injured child, calling an ambulance, or informing authorities, several people who gathered at the spot began looting the fish. Witnesses said individuals were seen stuffing fish into sacks and fleeing, even as the child’s body lay unattended nearby.

After being informed, police from Pupri Police Station arrived at the scene, dispersed the crowd, and restored order. The body of Ritesh Kumar was recovered and sent for a post-mortem examination in accordance with legal procedures.

Police have seized the pickup truck involved in the incident and launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the crash, including the identity and actions of the driver. Authorities said legal action would be taken based on the findings of the probe.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions about public apathy, moral responsibility, and road safety in Bihar, as images and reports from the scene circulated on social media.
