A Border Security Force head constable lost his life after being struck by lightning during a night patrol along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, as severe weather continued to affect the region.

A member of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has died after being struck by lightning while on patrol duty along the India-Bangladesh border in the eastern state of West Bengal, according to local media reports and BSF sources.

The deceased officer was identified as Vineet Kumar Dubey, 46, a Head Constable attached to the BSF’s 71st Battalion. Originally from Kannauj district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Dubey was serving at the Babura Ghat Border Outpost (BOP) in Murshidabad district.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night amid severe weather conditions that brought heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds to several parts of Murshidabad. BSF officials said Dubey was conducting routine patrol operations in an unfenced section of the international border near Mithipur when the lightning strike occurred.

According to preliminary reports, the officer was stationed near the zero line, the area marking the boundary between India and Bangladesh, and was carrying out surveillance duties in the open when lightning directly struck him.

Fellow BSF personnel who were on duty nearby immediately rushed to his assistance and transported him to the Mithipur camp. He was later taken to Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for emergency treatment. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

The tragic incident has highlighted the risks faced by border security personnel who continue their operations under challenging weather conditions to maintain surveillance and security along sensitive border regions.

BSF officials expressed condolences to the family of the deceased officer and praised his dedication to duty. Security operations along the border continued despite the adverse weather conditions, with authorities monitoring the situation closely.

The lightning strike was part of a broader spell of extreme weather that affected Murshidabad and surrounding areas. On the same day, four additional fatalities were reported in the Dhulian area of the district after a lightning strike hit a boat crossing the Ganges River.

Local authorities said the victims were traveling across the river when the lightning struck. At least 15 other passengers sustained injuries in the incident and were provided medical treatment. Emergency responders and local administration officials launched rescue efforts immediately after the accident.

Meteorological authorities have warned residents in several parts of eastern India to remain cautious as thunderstorms and lightning activity are expected to continue during the ongoing monsoon season. Disaster management agencies have urged people to avoid open spaces, water bodies, and exposed areas during severe weather events.

Lightning-related fatalities remain a recurring challenge in India during the monsoon months, particularly in rural and riverine regions where people are often exposed to outdoor conditions. Authorities regularly issue weather advisories and awareness campaigns aimed at reducing casualties.

The death of Head Constable Vineet Kumar Dubey has drawn attention to the dangers faced by security personnel stationed along remote border areas, where patrol duties often continue regardless of difficult weather conditions. Officials said further details regarding compensation and official honors for the deceased officer are expected to be announced following departmental procedures.

As investigations and administrative formalities continue, tributes have been paid to the fallen BSF member for his service and commitment while performing his duties on the international border.
